SGA NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2008!!

Are you interested in playing an active role in the future of your college?
Joining the Student Government Association is a great way to start.
Elections for next year's SGA are coming up in March. All positions on the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches must be filled.

SGA Passes New Constitution!!

To better serve the campus community and function more efficiently, the SGA has ratified a new Constitution. Our new Constitution reaffirms our deep commitment to serving the student body while strengthening our position as an organization. The SGA Senate has also formed an Ad-hoc Ammendments Committee to review the new document and make reccomendations to the Senate for Ammendments.

FRESHMAN ELECTIONS

Good Morning/Good Day/Good Evening

I hope everyone has been having a great week so far, and I am here to make your week so much brighter! Now that I am up to speed with everything that is going on around me I have come up with a solid timeline that will not waiver for Freshman Elections and those of you who do not want to run for government but would like to still take part please do not feel left out there are always plenty of things to do within SGA and for you own Freshman Class of course.

First things first...

Applications are available in the SGA office and in this email! Although it says only Freshman Class President on the top any position may use that application just state which position you are running for. By the way these are the positions available.

Hello Old Westbury Students!

Now is the time to get involved in student life here at Old Westbury! As your new SGA president I will be appointing students to fill vacant positions in the Student Government Association.

Available positions:

E-board:

Vice president of clubs and organizations (**Please note this position is still pending until the new constitution is passed.)

Student Senate:

Only those students who are majoring in the specified academic area are eligible to run for that representative position.

WELCOME!!!

Hello, fellow students and faculty. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jimmy Boone and I am your new Public Relations manager for the SGA. I am a senior at Old Westbury and i am currently majoring in media and communications. I would like to start off by welcoming you all back for the semester and I hope that your summer vacation was a pleasant one. I would also like to encourage you all to visit your student government representatives on the third floor of the student union building. We want to hear from you!!! Issues, Concerns, and especially Ideas are all welcomed for discussion.
My own personal office hours will be 4:45pm to 6:45pm on Tuesdays and from 7pm to 9pm on Thursdays. Also, I will be in my office from 10am to 12pm on Mondays. Opening:
The regular meeting of the Student Government Association was called to order at 20:10 on Monday January 28, 2008 in Room 309 (Student Union Building) by Phil Pragados.
Present:
Alysia Vasquez (VP of Student Programming & Activities), Phil Pragados (PEL Senator), Lauren Santiago (Chief Justice), Stanley Fritz (English Senator), Trianna Charles (Residential Representative), Angelica Goddette (MMIS Senator), Selena Hill (American Studies Senator), Clarissa Martinez (Commuter Representative), Tiffany Tait (Senior Class Representative), Iman Ture (Junior Class Representative), Justin Jarvis (Psychology Senator), Erik Sisenwein (Education Senator), Grace Mavodza (Chemistry and Physics Senator).
A. Approval of Agenda
The agenda was unanimously approved; Sheri Bailey is added onto agenda on point V.
B. New Business
Nominations for Chair of the meeting are held
Phil Pragados (PEL Senator) nominates himself
Nomination is seconded
5 senators in favor of Phil (8:20pm)
Nominations for Secretary for the senate meeting are held
Grace Mavodza and Trianna Charles are nominated for the position
4 senators vote in favor of Grace, 1 opposes, 1 abstains
Dean Ewing (the Dean of Students) speaks to SGA senators regarding issues that have arisen over the Winter break
Dean explains that the former SGA President has chosen to finish her college degree at CUNY Hunter
Due to the new constitution, several E-board members can no longer hold their positions
Discussion is held about how best to tackle the situation that has arisen as a result of lack of E-board members
Suggestion is made that nominations should be held for the individual who will fill the post of SGA president for the remainder of the semester
It is also suggested that the constitution be revised in order to accommodate succession problem in the future
Alysia Vasquez raises question about the cutting of checks
Susan McLoughlin (Director of Student Activities) explains that no checks are going to be cut until the operating procedures within SGA have been finalized
Point of Clarification requested by Stanely Fritz and Angelica Goddette: Question is raised about who exactly is eligible to be nominated for the position of President and about the procedures that are to take place once the nominations have been made
Dean restates that the eligibility requirements must be followed as stated by the current SGA constitution; applications for the position are to be handed in by January 31st, 2008, to allow time for Judicial and GPA checks to be conducted (as stated in the SGA constitution)
Phil Pragados suggests that the 1 year prior experience requirement in the constitution be amended
Dean Ewing emphasizes that protecting the integrity of the constitution is priority concern
Sheri Bailey is given time to speak (8:40pm)
Sheri explains that due to the new rule regarding GPA for E-board members, she will be unable to complete Spring semester as the Vice President of Clubs and Organizations
Sheri emphasizes that she fully supports SGA and is always wiling to help and/or advise when needed
Dean states that the same procedures that are used this year will apply to the SGA body next year
It is also mentioned that the incoming President this semester will be unable to run for the position next semester
Susan McLoughlin praises the work that Sheri Bailey has done in SGA and for her continuous dedication to SGA
Stanley Fritz motions to approve the resolution granting temporary power to the SGA Senate to appoint interim president until the Spring 2008 election (8:40pm)
Angelica Goddette second the motion
Vote is unanimous
Point of Clarification requested by Eric Sisenwein: A brief recap of the meeting is given and it is established that the voting for SGA President will take place on February 04, 2008
Point of Clarification requested by Lauren Santiago: Reconfirming that the incoming SGA president cannot run for the position next semester unless an amendment is made to the constitution to accommodate the current situation
Stanely Fritz motions to nominate Sheila Wilson Wells for the position of SGA President (8:45pm)
Angelica seconds the motion
A vote will be made once all the necessary paper work has been submitted and checked
Point of Clarification requested by Adesuwa Enabulele: Confirming that all nominations that are made should be information that is open to public
Alysia Vasquez reiterates that nominations for the position of SGA President must be submitted before the end of the meeting to ensure that the school body is informed about the nominations in a timely manner
Point of Clarification requested by Sheila Wilson Wells: Reconfirms that the incoming president must meet all SGA requirements before they are allowed to fill the position
Applications for the position of President were made available starting the evening of Monday January 28th, 2008 and were due no later than 5pm Thursday January 31, 2008.
Senate vote will take place on Monday February 4th, 2008
Stanley Fritz motions to have the issue of Freshman Class President added to the agenda prior to the discussion about elective by-laws (8:50pm)
Angelica Goddette seconds motion
Vote is unanimous
Sheri Bailey confirms that Julian was voted into the position Freshman Class President; ballots were indeed counted and the remaining procedures that are required are the Judicial and GPA check
Sheri Bailey confirms that ballots will be handed over to Stanley Fritz and Adesuwa Enabulele volunteers her time to assist in the application process for the Freshman Class President
Adesuwa Enabulele requests to be added onto agenda (8:55pm)
Adesuwa is added to the Announcements section of Agenda
Clarissa Martinez requests a Point of Personal Preference
By-Laws are read (8:56pm)
Stanley Fritz asks when applications for position of President are due
Sheri Bailey answers that applications were originally due on the 23rd of January but due to circumstances the new deadline is now the 22nd of February; February 4 to February 7 tabling is to take place in order to distribute applications; no set date has yet been established for "Meet the Candidates" (a date will be established once the candidates have gone through Judicial and GPA check)
Sheila Wilson Wells suggests that all flyers be taken down at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled voting day
Elections must take place by the 31st of January
Stanley motions to have the By-Laws approved including the ratification (i.e. the removal of flyers at least 24 hours prior to election day) (9:00pm)
Angelica Goddette seconds the motion
Vote is unanimous
A reminder is given that Senate meetings are to take place once every two weeks
Point of Clarification requested by Stanley Fritz: Asks about time required in order to schedule an emergency senate meeting
Answer given is at least 48 hours
Point of Clarification requested by Adesuwa Enabulele: Are only SGA members allowed to join school committees or are the posts open to all students?
Susan replies by stating that majority of the school committees do not mind whether or not a student is an SGA representative, but adds that a few committees do restrict persons to members of SGA only
Point of Clarification requested by Stanley Fritz: Reconfirms that SGA members can be involved in more than one committee
The only committee with a restriction on the number of representatives are the IAB and Faculty Committees; discussion of IAB By-Laws are discussed
Further discussion is made regarding committees and allocating members for each committee
Dean and Sheila both emphasize the necessity to attend the committee meetings since decisions involving student life will be made whether or not a student representative is present
Phil Pragados suggests that members postpone when senators sign up for committees until the next scheduled senate meeting (unless senators are sure about what committee they want to join)
Trianna Charles requests Point of Personal Preference
Angelica Goddette motions that senators pick which committees they would like to be involved in before the end of the meeting unless they are unsure in which case they are to postpone the signing up process until the next senate meeting (9:15pm)

Point of Clarification requested by Susan McLoughlin: Every Senator is to be a member of one college wide and one SGA committee
Upcoming SGA Senate meetings are announced
Point of Clarification requested by Sheila Wilson Wells: Brings up fact that Budget Committee may not be able to meet without the presence of an SGA President since that would be violating SGA constitution
It is established that the meeting can still take place provided ALL senators are present
Point of Clarification requested by Adesuwa Enabulele: Asks if Budget meeting could be postponed to a later date to ensure that all members show up for it
Only the Chair of the Budget Committee meeting can suggest or change the date
Angelica Goddette asks when timesheets are due
Susan assures members that all paper work is already in order
Adesuwa Enabulele is given time to speak during announcements
States that due to GPA restrictions she will be unable to complete her year as Sophomore Class President but is more than happy to assist SGA in any way she can
Point of Clarification requested by Angelica Goddette: Voices concern that no one meets all the requirements for remaining positions in SGA
Susan reiterates that it is the job of the incoming president to fill in the remaining positions in a timely manner
Phil Pragados asks for help from the SGA body on behalf of the Treasurer, Qudsia Osmani, due to her heavy workload for the current semester
Phil voices that the concern was brought up because any shortcomings resulting from our inability to assist one another would not only be seen as shortcomings on the Treasurer’s part, but as shortcomings made by SGA as a whole
Sheila Wilson Wells suggests that and "outlet" should be created for Qudsia i.e. when senators are doing office hours, Qudsia could leave a list of items that the senator(s) should complete before leaving the office as a way of assisting her
Susan suggests that the Emergency Senate meeting should be moved to Monday February 4th, 2008
